 Philanthropies

Our sorority has the most philanthropies on campus                      including Special Olympics, Girls On the Run,                     Adopt-A-Highway, Dinner For Heros and S. June                  Smith Center. These philanthropies support our                                          values in charitable giving.

Special Olympics.
In 1976, Alpha Sigma Alpha named the Special Olympics as our first philanthropy. Special Olympics is an international organization dedicated to empowering and strengthening individuals with special needs through physical fitness. By creating a healthy and competitive environment, participants in the Special Olympics complete feats that inspire and challenge all those involved. This positive experience helps the confidence of children with special needs and gives them a source of encouragement. The Zeta Kappa chapter volunteers annually during the spring for a Special Olympics event, as well signing up a team to participate in Polar Plunge!

Girls On The Run.
Most recently, in June of 2012, Alpha Sigma Alpha announced its partnership with Girls on the Run. This program combines training for the Girls on the Run 5K running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. GOTR is a life-changing, experiential learning program, for girls in 3rd-8th grade, which aims to empower girls to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, and embrace their gifts. It addresses many aspects of girls’ development- including their physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.

S. June Smith Center:
Our third national philanthropy is the S. June Smith Center, adopted in 1990. The S. June Smith Center is a center devoted to helping children with developmental needs through education, therapeutic services and work with families.

Dinner For Heroes.

In honor of the firefighters and the police officers of Mankato, Alpha Sigma Alpha - Zeta Kappa chapter hosts a dinner for these special men and women once a semester. We thank them for their hard work and being the heroes that risk their lives everyday to save others.

Adopt-A-Highway.

Adopt-A-Highway is a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter along highways. It enables environmentally conscious citizens, like the ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha, to make a personal contribution to a cleaner environment. As a sorority, we are responsible for a particular section of a highway. During both the spring and fall seasons, we sport our vibrant safety vests while making a difference in our local community.
